Reactivity is mostly to do with the reactivity scale of the periodic table of elements

The reactivity series

A reactivity series is a list of elements arranged in order of reactivity. The reactivity series of metals is used by chemists to predict what will happen in **displacement reactions**.

Metal ores contain metals or metal **compounds** in high enough concentrations to make the extraction of the metal economic. The method of extraction depends upon the position of the metal in the reactivity series. Reactive metals above carbon are extracted by **electrolysis**, and those below carbon or zinc can be extracted by **reduction** with carbon or carbon monoxide. Unreactive metals such as gold may need no chemical separation at all.
